JoCoPlantShow Has More For You!

The Johnston County Nursery Marketing Association will hold the 2010 JoCoPlantShow (formerly “Plant Fax Live”) on July 14th from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Kerr Scott Building located within the North Carolina State Fairgrounds Complex. Along with the trade show at which you will be able to browse high quality plants grown by our 26 nurseries, continuing education credits in both irrigation and pesticide education will be given. The show schedule is as follows:

8:00 am – 9:00 am: Show and class registration begins
9:00 am – 10:00 am: Pesticide CEU: ”Coping with Plant Stress – Identifying Problems and Using the Right Tools” presented by Dr. Barbara Fair of North Carolina State University (1 credit hour); Free
10:00 am – 11:00 am: “Understanding Drip Irrigation Part I” presented by Keith Coulsting of Netafim USA (1 credit hour); $10.00 registration fee*
11:00 am – 12:00 pm: JoCoPlants Showcase with Bryce Lane of “In the Garden with Bryce Lane“; Experience JoCoPlants as you have never seen them before!; free
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Break for Lunch
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm: Pesticide CEU: “Top 5 Pests and How to Control Them” presented by Amie Newsome, Johnston County Agricultural Extension Agent; free
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm: “Understanding Drip Irrigation Part II” presented by Keith Coulsting of Netafim USA (1 credit hour)*

*Understanding Drip Irrigation Part I:

Drip Myths – Dispelling the myths about drip irrigation such as clogging, non-pressure compensating, even coverage, etc.

Why use Drip – Reasons to consider using drip such as plant health/growth, confined areas, conservation. Mention of EPA/Water Sense programs. Value of IA certifications.

How easy is drip – Simple format to include drip into an irrigation system.

What’s different – Comparison between traditional and drip irrigation

Other components – Additional components used in a drip system such as filters, regulators, flush valves, etc. Hands on with product.

Part II:

Site survey – Using a site survey to determine drip application

Techline CV layout – Layout of drip explaining which emitter size and spacing to use, lengths of runs and GPM used

Techline CV calculator – Design calculator to help figure type of drip, components, amount needed and water usage as well as other information.

Costs – Comparison discussion between traditional irrigation and drip irrigation. Installation, maintenance and water usage.

Materials handed out for class too include; Netafim catalog, design guide, quick layout design sheet, drip product sample bag. Each company will also be given the Netafim CD which includes the design calculator, cut sheets, specs and more.

JoCoPlantShow Updated Schedule

The Johnston County Nursery Marketing Association will hold the new and improved JoCoPlantShow (formerly “Plant Fax Live”) on July 14th, 2010 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the N.C. State Fairground’s Kerr Scott Building in Raleigh, NC. This year’s show is upgraded from years’ past shows with educational sessions including pesticide and irrigation continuing education credits and a Plant Showcase with host Bryce Lane from “In the Garden with Bryce Lane”. You can still browse high quality plants from all 24 of JoCoPlants experienced growers and browse products ranging from pesticides to mulch to farm equipment. The show’s schedule is as follow:8:00 – 9:00 am: Registration for show and educational sessions opens
9:00 am: Show floor opens for browsing
9:00 – 10:00 am: Pesticide CEU – 1 hr. (free)
10:00 – 11:00 am: Irrigation CEU Part I - 1 hr. ($10 reg. fee)
11:00 – 12:00 pm: Break for lunch
1:00 – 2:00 pm: Pesticide CEU – 1 hr. (free)
2:00 – 3:00 pm: Irrigation CEU, Part II - 1 hr. ($10 reg. fee)

We are very excited to be partnering with the Carolinas Irrigation Association to bring you these very important Irrigation Continuing Education Units. The course titled “Understanding Drip Irrigation” given by Netafim USA consultant, Keith Coulsting, consists of two parts for 1 hour of credit each (totalling 2 possible hours). During Part I, held from 10:00 – 11:00 am, attendees will dispell Drip Myths, learn reasons why to use drip, how easy drip install really is, compare traditional and drip irrigation, and learn about other components essential to drip irrigation. During Part II, held from 2:00 – 3:00 pm, attendees will learn how to conduct a site survey for drip irrigation, how to layout drip irrigation for optimal water usage, and compare costs between traditional and drip irrigation. Materials given out during the classes are: Netafim catalog, design guide, quick layout design sheet, a drip product sample bag, and a CD containing design calculator, cut sheets, specs, and more.

The Johnston County Nursery Marketing Association is putting on the JoCo Plants Show complete with educational courses including continuing education irrigation credits, pesticide credits, and Plant ID with “In the Garden” host Bryce Lane. Each JCNMA nursery will be showcasing their plants trade show style. All of these events will be held at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC. Pesticide Disposal Day! (March 25)

The Johnston County Pesticide Disposal Day will be held on March 25, 2010 at the Johnston County Livestock Arena. The doors will open at 10:00 AM and remain open until 2:00 PM. The Pesticide Disposal Assistance Program (PDAP) is a consumer services program in the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The goal of the Pesticide Disposal Assistance Program is to assist these citizens of North Carolina by managing and supervising the safe collection and lawful disposal of banned, out-dated, or unwanted pesticides. Since its inception, the Pesticide Disposal Assistance Program has properly collected and disposed of over 1 million pounds of pesticides from North Carolina. The Program’s goal for the future is to assist and promote the establishment permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection sites in those counties without permanent facilities. In addition, the Pesticide Disposal Assistance Program also intends to conduct approximately 40 Collection Day events per year throughout the state in an attempt to have a Pesticide Collection Day in each county in the state at least once every other year.

Pesticide Exams March 17th

The NCDA will offer the pesticide license exams for all categories on March 17th at 1:00. Anyone wishing to take any of the exams should be at the Johnston County Ag Center by 12:30 with an ID, pencils, and a calculator. There will be a review for all private applicators beginning at 10:00 at the Ag center.

Ornamental and Turf Exam Review

There will be a review for anyone wishing to take the Ornamental and Turf Exam on Tuesday, March 16 beginning at 3:00 PM and ending at 5:00 PM at the Ag center. Interactive Pesticide Day (March 12: 1:00-3:00 pm)

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension is inviting all applicators to interactive pesticide training on March 12th, 2010 beginning at 1:00 pm in Smithfield, NC. The training will be held at the Johnston County Livestock Arena, 520 County Home Road, Smithfield, NC. County Home Road is about 2 miles West of the Johnston County Ag Center on NC 210 Highway. At this event there will be some hands on activities to help emphasize and enhance skills needed for applying pesticides correctly including; reviewing software for wind prediction, drift management, sprayer calibration, and PPE. The training will provide 2 credit hours are available for pesticide applicators in categories A, B, G, H, I, L, N, O, D, X.

Fruit Tree Training and Pruning Demonstration: Moved to March 6, 2010 due to Inclement Weather

There will be a Fruit Tree training and pruning demonstration at The Central Crops Research Station in Clayton, NC on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 10am until 12pm. Dr. Mike Parker will be presenting information on training and pruning fruit trees at the workshop at the research station. Pesticide credits of 0.5 hours have been approved for codes L N O D X.
