<p>Minimum Requirements</p>
<p>Undergraduate degree in horticulture or related field. Thorough knowledge of horticultural practices and principals with a minimum of 5 years experience supervising staff in related tasks. Minimum 3 years experience, working in, preferably managing, a greenhouse production facility to include an understanding of greenhouse environmental management along with extensive knowledge of propagating annuals, perennials, tropicals, and woody ornamentals. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Access). Ability to learn complex greenhouse control systems. NC Public Operators Pesticide License required with at least 3 years experience applying pesticides and preferably 1 year experience training and overseeing other applicators. Extensive woody plant knowledge with a minimum of one year experience in landscape design.  1 year experience in maintaining records, writing reports, and general office duties related to unit activities.  A Valid NC Class &#8220;C&#8221; Driver&#8217;s License.</p>
<p> Position Duties</p>
<p>Provides support, training, and administrative oversight to the horticulture operations of the parks department. Works closely with 14 division gardeners to coordinate special planting projects, develops and reviews landscape designs, reviews plans submitted for capital projects, and other related horticultural tasks. Responsible for purchasing and distributing all related materials.  Oversees the management of a departmental pesticide policy. Provides training and supervision of the department&#8217;s 32 licensed pesticide applicators. Responsible for all purchasing, inventory, storage, and related documentation of pesticides, including maintaining and operating a large access database for pesticides. Oversees the management of the greenhouse and nursery while having direct supervision of the fulltime grower and part time assistant. Interacts with other city departments, government agencies, vendors and industry professionals to insure department&#8217;s goals are met.</p>
<p>The ideal candidate for this position should be strongly self directed and organized with the ability to multi-task. Flexibility, creativity, and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines are essential. This candidate will have the opportunity to work with all levels of personnel, other city departments, outside agencies, vendors, and volunteers etc.; strong written and verbal communication skills critical.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Growers, landscapers, and homeowners beware!  Granulate ambrosia damage was reported in Johnston Co. today. Growers in this area should begin protecting susceptible trees with preventative applications of a pyrethroid insecticide.</p>
<p>Growers in colder regions may have weeks before beetles emerge though with this warm weather it may not be long.</p>
<p>Recommendations: A landscape borer spray containing a pyrethroid such as permethrin or bifenthrin can be used and may have to be reapplied every three weeks while beetles are active.</p>
<p>Astro, Permethrin Pro (permethrins), and Onyx (bifenthrin) are registered for use on tree trunks in the landscape.</p>
<p>For nursery sites Perm-Up (permethrin) is labeled for field grown nursery stock.  OnyxPro (bifenthrin) is labeled for application to tree trunks in landscape and nursery sites.</p>
<p>Generic equivalents to the above products are also acceptable.</p>
